Deck Staining & Sealing in Grand Rapids, MI

Our 3-step deck restoration process is backed by a 2-year warranty.

Hero: Deck Staining & Sealing in progress

Built around prep, protection, and a lasting finish.

Michigan weather is brutal on decks. Heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw cycles, spring rains, summer humidity, and UV exposure all break down wood and finish faster than most homeowners expect.

Hillis Brothers has a deck restoration process specifically built for West Michigan conditions. Three steps, premium products, and a 2-year written warranty on the finish.

Our Process

Our 3-Step Deck Restoration Process

  1. 01

Step 1: Mildew Treatment and Cleaning

We apply a mildew treatment to kill any growth in the wood, then pressure wash the entire deck to remove dirt, old finish, and surface debris.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Sanding and Prep

We sand the deck surface to open up the wood grain for better stain penetration. We carry stand-up sanders for full decks and detail tools for railings and stairs. Minor board replacement for rotting deck boards is included (non-structural); we do not replace handrails or structural components.

  3. 03

Step 3: Premium Stain and Seal

We apply a premium stain and sealer designed for Michigan climate: one coat for transparent, semi-transparent, and semi-solid stains, and two coats for solid stain, with attention to railings, stairs, and end grain to ensure complete protection.
