Exterior Painting: Four Things To Keep In Mind

1. Prep, Prep, Prep

To ensure the best coverage of primer and paint, you must properly prep the surface. The first step is to remove the dirt and dust that tends to build on an exterior. If you want to know just how dirty your exterior is, just run a wet white t-shirt across the siding. Anyways, we use a pressure washer to quickly get this done.

Why do we do this?

Because paint doesn’t adhere very well to dirty, rough, or uneven surfaces.

Be sure to not only clean the siding but also the trim.

From there, we’ll sand or scrape any peeling paint to create a solid surface.

While doing all of this, we’ll also walk around the entire perimeter of the house and take note of damaged surfaces that may need to be replaced. For example, rotten siding has to be replaced.

2. Quality Over Price

Better quality paint means you’ll paint fewer times over the years and you’ll get more coverage from the paint you buy. This is why we never skimp on paint because we don’t want us or our clients to end up paying more in the long run because they have an inferior product.

3. Use Primer

You always want to apply at least one good coat of primer to the exterior after cleaning and sanding the surface.

4. Prep The Landscape

How did we almost forget? You’ll want to also prep the landscape by covering doors, windows, lighting fixtures, and anything else you don’t want the paint to get on. We like to use plastic sheeting and painter’s tape for this.

Paint can get really messy so you’ll also want to cover the ground, bushes, and any other vegetation with drop cloths.
